Evaluation and Evaluative Commentary
The institution that would make my film noir film (Love V.S. Hatred) would be Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation —also known as 20th Century Fox, 20th Century Fox Pictures, or simply Fox. It is one of the six major American film studios. The company as we know today, was formed on May 31, 1935, as the result of the merger between Fox Film Corporation, founded by William Fox in 1915, and Twentieth Century Pictures, founded in 1933. They have created successful noir films back in the 1940's such as 'Laura' winning 1 Oscar for best cinematography and have been nominated 4 times. The target audience for this film would be niche fans of 1940’s noir and in order to attract this specific audience I’ve incorporated several conventions of film noir onto my poster such as having a troubled detective, a prominent femme fatale and a smoke effect.
The institution that would make my hybrid poster (The 10th Circle of Hell) would be Blumhouse Productions. Blumhouse Productions is an American movie production company, founded and run by Jason Blum. The institution produces micro and low-budget horror movies and is well known for their Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister franchises. This production company would be suitable for my film, as they are well known for producing horror films that meets the genre of my hybrid film as it incorporates aspects of the horror genre. This is clearly evident in my poster through the conventional setting my poster takes place in (a ominous forest) as well as the unearthly monsters which lurks behind the main character (a female victim) another convention of horror films. However, in this poster the prominent female character breaks stereotype as we can see her having a confident stance looking fearless whilst wielding an Assault rifle behind her head in an aura of flames that could connote her power and fearlessness. Through the use of props and performance shown in this poster we can immediately suggest that this Hybrid film also consists of the action genre through the use of flames this could connote violence; a typical convention of action films. Additionally, through the use of the assault rifle wielded by a female wielding it suggesting that she may be a Female action hero, which is also a convention of action films.
The researches that I’ve carried out were analyzing Film noir documentaries, Film noir opening scenes and posters. Furthermore, as I was analyzing these posters I was focusing on the significance of women and how they were presented within them. While I was analyzing the film noir posters I’ve realized that women were presented to a more dominant and bold figures in comparison to the men. Whereas, in the Hollywood movie posters women are presented to be insignificant as they are placed to the side of the poster and are in a much smaller scale to the men.
