Film openings are used to give the audience an idea about what the film is about which helps them establish the genre and story of the film. This is also used to introduce characters and is usually used to give credits to the actors playing in film, who did the cinematography and who directed the film and more. Additionally, Film openings include an ident, which include the Film Companies name so that the audience may be aware of which film company produced the film. Through the use of film opening this introduces different kind of characters, props, settings and lighting used which sets a specific atmosphere to the film.
In our Film opening that my group mates and I created. We’ve included the following codes and conventions that I’ve stated earlier. This is apparent when we included the Warner Brother’s 1930/40’s ident at the start of our Film Opening and we’ve included credits introducing actors that starred in our film, the people in charge of cinematography, the editor of the film, the people in charge of sound, the screenplay writers and the director.
Furthermore, we’ve included different characters such as the parents, the murderer and the 2 brothers. Interest and curiosity is drawn from the audience when the parents are killed, as they will wonder what the motive of this killer is. The enigma code would be the audience wondering if the two brothers will ever seek revenges much of a cliffhanger that will hook the audience to see my film.
The cinematography that we’ve used throughout the film includes a variety of different camera angles such as low-angle shot, close-up, high-angle shot, Dutch angle and tracking shot. We also had to schedule the time when we went filming so that the lighting will be just right (Not too light, Not too dark) by being aware through the weather broadcasts on the TV. The props that we’ve used were cigars, a typewriter, a glass of whisky, old newspaper and a lamp that are common conventions of the classic Film Noir. Also, the costumes that we’ve used are trench coats, fedora hats, suspenders, dress, formal attire and leather shoes to match the time in which the film is set in (which is 1930/40’s).
For the first scene, we filmed in a dark alley (Behind Tesco) at around 4:00pm to make sure that there were not as much people around. On the second scene, we decorated the office by placing props around the room such as the lamp, newspaper, typewriter and a glass of rum, lowered the lighting inside the room and used venetian blinds to be the only source of light to make the office look like a Detectives office, a classic convention of Film Noir. We also made sure that our performance included the right terminology such as “Gun” would be referred to as a “Gat” back then in 1930’s. Through this performance this will convince the audience that this film takes place in that time.
When we edited our film we applied the filter function on Adobe premiere to our scenes in order for them to be black and white to meet the typical convention of Film Noir. We also had to look up Jazz like tracks to include them in the background of our scenes to add a Film Noir effect.
Throughout the shooting of this film opening I’ve learned several things such as if you want to have different camera angles in your film you must film the whole scene with 1 camera and angle then repeat the procedure with different camera angles in order for editing to go smoothly and not lack footage. We also learned to maintain the consistency of acting throughout the scenes by marking the floor with masking tape in order for the actors to know where to go and we must count to 3 before and after recording to not lose any footage that may be needed.
We looked at the types of film companies that produced Film Noirs in the 1930’s/40’s, and decided to use one of those for our production company ident (Warner Bros) at the beginning of our opening. This is because Warner Brothers was well known for the production of Noir films in the 1940’s. The target audience for our film would be young males and fans of crime films, and the secondary audience could possibly be females who watch films with their husband/boyfriend.
In addition to my audience, my film noir opening was influenced by an audience research in which I’ve created and conducted through SurveyMonkey; a free website which allows users to construct surveys and easily have access to the results in a graph or tabular model. The questions that I’ve formulated for the survey includes questions such as ‘Where would you expect a Film Noir opening to take place?’, ‘What kind of music would you expect?’, ‘What props would you expect to see?’ and so forth. Upon collecting the results this influenced my decisions as to what I would put in my Film Noir opening like the location in which my opening takes place; the dark alley as it was voted the most in my survey (8 out of 10 responses), the cliff hanger (6 out of 10), the detective’s fedora (7 out of 10) and a story-line of Revenge/Vengeance (8 out of 10) and so on.
Furthermore, our film opening was also influenced from a Film noir opening that we’ve watched and analysed. The name of the Noir was “Crime wave” this is clearly evident through the opening as we were influenced to feature a robbery and murder at the start of the film as seen in the film. This feature of the film opening was beneficial for our film opening, as this would immediately hook the audience and get them asking “Who is robbing them?”, “Why did they murder the couple?”, “What is his incentive?”. Hence leaving them in a cliff-hanger that will attract them to watch the rest of the film.
Overall I believe that the film opening that we’ve created was pretty good and turned out well. However, I believe that there could still have still been some room for improvement. These improvements could have been: that we could have a included variety of camera angles, a dutch angle more specifically (as this is a prominent convention of film noir), The use of lighting to create shadows/silhouettes at the beginning of the opening to create tension and suspense for the audience whilst the killer walks towards the couple and lastly a prominent femme fatale/doom hero as our Film opening didn’t clearly represent/emphasize on them during the opening.
